Level#2Most disorders of the endocrine system are caused by one or more of the glands not working correctly. A gland may produce too much , or not enough of a hormone. This imbalance can have harmful effects on the rest of the body. The pituitary gland produces important hormones that control other glands and hormones. If the pituitary gland does not work properly, other parts of the body are affected. For example, the pituitary gland may make too little thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH. When too little TSH is made, the thyroid gland does not make enough of its own hormones. The rate that the body uses energy is then lowered. A person can then gain weight and have a lower heart rate and body temperature.

1. What is the result of a gland producing too much or too little of a hormone?

2. What happens when the pituitary gland does not work properly?

3. What is the result of the pituitary gland not producing enough TSH?

Other endocrine problems include infertility, growth and development disorders, diabetes, hypoglycemia, and kidney disorders. The part of the body that is affected depends on which endocrine gland has a disorder.
