There are a few steps you can follow to manage a pulled muscle on your own. First, you must take steps to limit swelling by applying ice to the muscle for 15 to 20 minutes. Leave the ice off for 20 minutes before applying again. You also need to protect the injured muscle by resting it. Wrapping and elastic bandage over the area will also help to reduce the swelling. Elevating the injured muscle above the level of the heart will also help to reduce the swelling.
