The esophagus is a food tube made of muscle. It squeezes together, involuntarily, to push the food down toward the stomach. It connects the mouth to the stomach. There is a flap of tissue called the epiglottis between these two openings. The epiglottis closes when your swallow. This keeps the food from going down the windpipe and prevents you from choking.
