The esophagus is a food tube made of muscle. Muscles in the esophagus squeeze together, involuntarily, to push the food down toward the stomach. It connects the mouth to the stomach.

The esophagus is a food tube made of muscle. Muscles in the esophagus squeeze together, involuntarily, to push the food down toward the stomach. It connects the mouth to the stomach. There is a flap of tissue called the epiglottis between these two opening. the epiglottis closes when you swallow. This keeps food from going down the windpipe and prevents you from choking.
