Level#3: The small intestine is the place where the nutrients in the food we eat are absorbed by the body. When food leaves your stomach it is mostly liquid. This liquid goes into the small intestine, which is connected to the stomach and is directly below it. The small intestine has many tiny blood vessels that allow the nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream to feed the body. This happens because the lining of the small intestine has many folds and tiny finger-shaped structures called villi.
The villi increase the surface area of the small intestine. This means more nutrients can be absorbed by the body.
